Here are some duas (supplications) you can recite at a funeral, for the deceased, and at their grave:
Funeral Prayers Dua:
- After the burial:
Arabic: رَحِمَ اللهُ مُحَمَّدًا وَآلَ مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَغَفَرَ لَهُ وَأَدخَلَهُ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعَاذَهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ Transliteration: Rabihuma Muhammadan wa aali Muhammad, wa ghafara lahu wa adkhala hul-jannah, wa a'athahu min 'adhabi n-naar Translation: "May Allah have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and forgive him and admit him into Paradise, and save him from the punishment of the Hellfire.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]
For the Deceased:
- General Dua:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ مَدْخَلَهُ اغْسِلْهُ بِالْمَاءِ وَالثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ وَنَقِّهِ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا يُنَقَّى الثَّوْبُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir lahu wa irhamhu wa 'aafihi wa 'af 'anhu wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' madkhalahu, ighsilhu bil-ma'i wa الثلج (ath-thalji) wal-bardi wa naqqih min al-khataya kama yunadda ath-thawbu al-abyadu min ad-danasi. Translation: "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him wellness and safety, pardon him, honor his dwelling place, and expand his entrance. Wash him with water, snow, and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from filth." [Sahih Muslim]
- Dua for Raising Rank:
Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ قَبْرَهُ رَوْضَةً مِّن رِّياضِ الْجَنَّةِ ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْهُ حُفْرَةً مِّنْ حُفَرِ النَّارِ Transliteration: Allahumma ij'al qabrahu rawdatan min riyadhil-jannah, wa la taj'alhu hufratan min hufarin-nar. Translation: "O Allah, make his grave a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and do not make it a pit from the pits of Hellfire." [Jami at-Tirmidhi]
At the Grave:
- When placing the body in the grave:
Arabic: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ Transliteration: Bismillah wa 'ala sunnati Rasulillah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam Translation: "In the name of Allah and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." [Muslim and Ahmad]
- After filling the grave:
** You can recite any dua you like, but here's a common one:** Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ غَافِرٍ وَخَيْرُ رَاحِمٍ Transliteration: Allahumma ighfir lahu wa irhamhu wa anta khayrul ghafirin wa khayrur rahim. Translation: "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, for You are the best of those who forgive and the best of those who show mercy." [An-Nasai]
