What are the three nafs in Islam?

 The three nafs in Islam represent different stages or conditions of the inner self:

  1. An-Nafs al-Ammara (The Commanding Nafs): This is often referred to as the "soul inciting evil." It represents the base or primal self driven by desires and immediate gratification. It focuses on self-interest and can lead a person towards sinful acts or neglecting their spiritual well-being.

  2. An-Nafs al-Lawwama (The Reproaching Nafs): This can be understood as the "self-blaming soul." It awakens to the concept of right and wrong after a mistake or wrongdoing. This nafs feels remorse and guilt, recognizing the need for self-correction and seeking forgiveness.

  3. An-Nafs al-Mutma'inna (The Content Nafs): This translates to the "soul at peace." It represents the highest state of the nafs, achieved through inner tranquility and submitting to God's will. The content nafs finds satisfaction in doing good deeds and strives for ongoing spiritual growth.
