What are the 5 basic teachings of Islam?

Islam's core teachings are often referred to as the Five Pillars of Islam. These aren't exactly teachings, but rather the foundational practices that Muslims strive to follow throughout their lives.

The Five Pillars are:

  1. Shahada (Declaration of Faith): Publicly proclaiming the belief in one God (Allah) and the prophethood of Muhammad. This is the foundation of Islamic faith.
  2. Salat (Prayer): Performing ritual prayers five times a day at designated times. These prayers connect Muslims directly with Allah.
  3. Zakat (Almsgiving): Donating a specific portion of one's wealth to the poor and needy. This promotes social responsibility and helps those in need.
  4. Sawm (Fasting): Abstaining from food, drink, and other sensual pleasures from dawn to dusk during the holy month of Ramadan. Fasting teaches self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and spiritual growth.
  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage): Undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, at least once in a lifetime if physically and financially able. Hajj promotes unity among Muslims and commemorates the journey of Prophet Abraham and his family.
